Baldor-Reliance® explosion-proof motors are certified for use in hazardous locations or potentially hazardous environments where concentrations of combustible gases, vapors and or dust may be present. These motors meet UL and CSA standards for use in Division based hazardous locations per NFPA70 National Electric Code and C22.1, the Canadian Electric Code.

What Makes Motors Explosion Proof

Their TEFC-XP (totally enclosed, fan cooled) and TENV-XP (totally enclosed, non-ventilated) enclosures keep internal explosions contained, while their flame paths allow for a safer escape for burning gases, helping to mitigate chances of an external ignition. Although many explosion proof motors are TEFC (totally enclosed fan cooled), not all TEFC motors are suitable for hazardous locations.

To control the damage when an internal explosion happens, the connection box will be visibly larger and likely have more bolts than a general-purpose motor.

If hazardous materials are present in the pulp and paper, mining or grain industries (class II, group E, F & G), motors specifically rated for explosive dusts are typically required. Dust may settle on the surface of the motor, increasing the surface temperature and limiting the cooling ability, potentially leading to overloading. Dustproof seals and bearings also prevent dust from entering the motor and causing an explosion.
