What Makes Motors Explosion Proof
eMotors Direct’s stock of NEMA explosion proof electric motors are designed to be used for hazardous location applications. Their TEFC-XP (totally enclosed, fan cooled) and TENV-XP (totally enclosed, non-ventilated) enclosures keep internal explosions contained, while their flame paths allow for a safer escape for burning gases, helping to mitigate chances of an external ignition. Although many explosion proof motors are TEFC (totally enclosed fan cooled), not all TEFC motors are suitable for hazardous locations.
Our NEMA explosion proof motors are CSA approved for use in Classes I & II and Division I hazardous locations. One way to spot an explosion proof motor is the connection box. To control the damage when an internal explosion happens, the connection box will be visibly larger and likely have more bolts than a general-purpose motor.
Dust Ignition Proof Motors
If hazardous materials are present in the pulp and paper, mining or grain industries (class II, group E, F & G), motors specifically rated for explosive dusts are typically required. Dust may settle on the surface of the motor, increasing the surface temperature and limiting the cooling ability, potentially leading to overloading. Dustproof seals and bearings also prevent dust from entering the motor and causing an explosion.
